A state of the art unit at a Northumberland hospital has won a prestigious award.
Mitford Unit, which is part of Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust (NTW) was awarded Best Mental Health Development at the 2017 Building Better Healthcare Awards.
The annual awards celebrate innovation, architecture, people, products and services that are helping to transform patient care in the UK.
The unit was purpose built for patients with autism, incorporating many specialised features to ensure the best possible environment for our patients.
“The incredible amount of design and interaction undertaken with all stakeholders is clearly reflected in the success of the finished building. Mitford is now the benchmark on how we develop and deliver future projects in the Trust”
– John Carson,
Head of Capital Development and Planning, NTW Solutions
Construction of the purpose built 15 bedded unit began in 2015, with the first patients moving in early December 2016. However, the planning and design of the facility started long before this and involved staff, carers, service-users, and stakeholders.
The Building Better Healthcare award is a further hallmark of Mitford’s design excellence following recent awards of European Healthcare Design Awards 2017 highly commended and Design in Mental health award 2017 Collaborative Estates team.
